Poor Aline

Today Paulo was walking Branca on a leash out of our shelter. Then the dog managed to squeeze her neck through the collar and run away!!!
He was following her but she run and run. Rosa did the same, but Branca was escaping. I followed but nothing helped. I called the help of volunteer whom she likes very much but when she came Branca was not around any more and didn't come when she shouted her name. We were exausted!! I went to look for her driving by car and I went to a place where men treat the trash. There I saw a dog, a big dog with her breasts full of milk. I asked the man there where were the puppies he said he had given them away. I asked: you gave away or you killed? My college said to me: it's impossible, he couldn't have given them away, they were too young; I think he killed them.
The dog was very skinny, too much. I suddenly thought: maybe this is the mother of 7 puppies we had found in Quinta do Conde? (because this place belongs to the same company as the place in Quinta do Conde). We put the dog in my car and we took her to the puppies to see if she recognizes them. No, they were not her puppies, they were obviously younger that her puppies should be. Nevertheless we put her inside with the puppies and they drank her milk. It was not a good idea, they wounded her breasts. Poor girl, but she was very lovely with them, she never complaines. I thought it was better not to continue though. The man from the place didn't let us keep the dog, but he took her to our vet. She has a inflation on breast and the vet did the leshmanie test. The vet gave her an anthibiotic, because she has a biggggg otites. Aline will need 1350€ during 6 months for her treatments. We need urgent help. Without support we cannot help animals!

Branca came back to our shelter about 17h. I think she wanted us find to Aline. Nothing happens without a reason!

Salomão the sweet boxer

Today, 29th of December, me and Rosa received a call from a woman who saw an ill dog. I went there as soon as I could. When I arrived, I was loking for the dog but I saw nothing. So I called the woman and she told me to look very well in the middle of the grass.
So I walked for some minutes and I saw a sad "picture". A dog layed there, ill, afraid of people.
I tried to feed him and he wanted to eat but as soon I wanted to catch him he moved back. The woman who called us came to help me, she lives there. She brought cheese and after 30 minutes we forced him to enter my car puting a collar on her neck and a leash. We went to the vet with him and the vet said he is about 10 years old. The bloodtests said us he has anemia, leshmanie and his kidneys are affected. The vet said the values of the tests are not dramatic and we should try to save him. He wants that we save him, said Dr Luis! We are trying to save him, he is taking Aluporinol and some injections. He will be in Vet Clinic during 3 days to see if his kidneys reach satisfied values and then we begin with Glucantime. He is a big boxer, friendly, and lovely. The person who abandoned him had no courage to take a decision or to treat him!! One more dog to treat. It is dificult in this country for dogs and for those who want to protect and save them, our true friends.

Some walk freely and others are inside kennels, it depends on the space we have when they come to us.

Here are the puppies we found in the trash. Look, they are so lovely!

Jakeline ADOPTED

When our volunteers arrived yesterday to the shelter by 8 in the morning, they found a new dog inside!
The dog was trembling because of cold and fear. Rosa warmed her and fed her, she was so hungry!!

She is a small dog, about 6 kilos, 3-4 years old, very calm and sweet.
She was lucky, the only dog that was free in the kennel was Mimi, but even Mimi could bite in a dangerous situation.
We think that the person who threw her inside was looking the "better" place to do that. If she was thrown to the oposite side, where we put Cesar free all night, to guard, she would have certainly been bitten for sure. We need a dog to guard because it happened one or twice in Portugal that people went to the shelters to free dogs or to stole dogs or to do lots of other things. We want Cesar to guard the shelter.
It was lucky too that she didn't break a leg. Or another damage.
So you can see what people can do want when they don't want their animals anymore. They throw away! When people divorce and they don't want to keep pets, when they move house and they "forget" pets, when the pet have grown 10cm more than expected, when the pets loose hair on the floor......
People should buy porcelaine dogs, they don't give troubles!!

Puppies abandoned near trash ADOPTED

A man came to our shelter this morning. He told Katia that he had seen yesterday 7 puppies: very thin, without the mother abandoned near the trash and in a great danger!
Katia sent me a sms and I quickly called the man.
He told me where it was and that he had given milk to the puppies but if we didn't go there they would die in few days.
I and Rosa went there. What we saw was terrible!! Seven puppies, with "milky" eyes, alone in the the trash, next to a drain pipe!! A great danger!!
They were without protection and the man that called us had created a temporary protection from the rain a day before.
The puppies were so alone, so unhappy, so miserable!! Where is the mother? Who put the puppies there? Who is the monster that did that???? How can a person sleep after doing this??!!
These puppies have 4 weeks! Someone put them there to die alone, without food and mother they would die!
I wolud like to meet this person to look in the eyes and tell him he is a murderer.

In this moment we have 43 pupies aged from 4 weeks to 5 months.
We need a great help for adopt our babies. The shelter is completely full and without space to keep more animals. We are living very dificult moments. We need help!

Dramatic rescue of puppies (5 ADOPTED, 5 STILL WITH US)

Sunday, the 15th of October we went to rescue the puppies of Madalena. A wild dog, very frightened but sweet. She never had known a touch of human hand! So she thinks all humans are bad. We tried several times to rescue her but wihtout success . When her puppies came with her out of their hiding place, they were already as the mother, afraid. Wild, without much possibility to be adopted.

We began about 15 h. Gloves and protection clothes. The place where we were looking for the puppies is about 500 meters, full of high bamboos.

We descended down a hole and the trousers of André got just damaged! Someone warned us just in time that there was water in the well!!!! IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE ANYTHING.

We broke through the bamboos for about 3 meters, it was very compact, dark inside, no sun can go inside. We walked on our knees and crawled, it was the only way to continue. About one hour later we heard voices of the puppies!!!! We were so happy. At least we could demarcate the area of about 100 meters.
By 18h we still didn't find them. We were tired, so tired and frustated. We said, it is impossible, we must give up.
But Silvia and Andeia said NO, I don't go home without finding them! And Silvia continued with forces we don't know where she gets them from, they came from her heart. We followed her.
Suddenly Silvia said. They are here!!! I'm seeing them!. It was a miracle for all of us.
She went slowly, because they were so afraid. She took the first and in a human cord we passed the puppies to each other.
When André had the 3rd puppy he fell inside a bamboo, we only saw his head! Rosa shouted that André didn't feel well. The powder of the bamboo was suffocating him. Miguel gave me the 4th puppy and he went to help André, André came slowly out. Ufff.
Andreia was laying with a puppy between ger legs and she could not move.
We got 9 pupies: 6 girls and 3 boys, 4 weeks old. The way to come back was impossible with the puppies. How to come out from this devil's place? Miguel and Silvia made bags out of their coats. I had one puppy, Andreia had another pupy, André had 3, Migeul had 2 and Rosa had 2 more puppies.
Silvia went to look for a way out, we followed her. We were doing more or less ok, when sudenly we needed to climb up once more, with puppies in one hand .......
But we did! Out of this place, it was happiness! Andreia said: I lost my mobile phone, but doesn't matter because we have the babies. Miguel, her husband said, no we go down look for it. they went and we heard a shout: there is another baby!!! Oh my god, nothing happens without a reason, this puppy is called TMN (the mobile phone network).
The puppies are called Andre, Andreia, Miguel, Silvia, Rosa, Ana, Sunny, Team, Bamboo e TMN. The Bamboo was pinched by the bamboos, and could not walk! She was like a frog. She went to the vet and is doing phisiotherapy. She can walk now!
We are looking for support to vaccinate and feed them.
The next rescue will be the mother Madalena. We must succed!
