Nelia - a victim of someone who amuses himself shooting at defenceless living beings

Nelia was living in the forest near the beach; she was born there, with her two sisters, the daughter of an abandoned female dog. She is very gentle and around 7 months old. She was walking around limping and it seemed that she was in pain. One of Bianca friends who was feeding them nearly since their birth, caught her and took her to the vet as he thought that she had broken her leg. She had an X-ray taken and then we realised that she had pieces of lead in her leg - someone was practising shooting to dogs there. There are many little holes in her front right paw, some probably in the articulation and this is why she has problems walking. She usually keps her leg in the air but most of all she prefers to be sitted or to lay down. We can see in leg's picture the mark of the balls.
Two of her sister stayed there and they are also limping. They are not so social and trustful as Nelia but it is absolutely urgent that we catch them!
Who is amusing himself by shooting at defenceless living beings? Next time he will do it to people, just wait and see.
It is URGENT to have Nelia operated and to find a 5-star family for her. She is scared but friendly and gentle, she only needs a bit of care and love to feel safe.
We also need to catch her sisters and have them operated - but we need help, we need your help! Foster them and help us to pay their operations, adopt them or help us finding good homes for them!
UPDATE: Nelia does not need to be operated. She was limping because her toe was broken but she is already walking better. the vet advised not to remove the lead from the leg.

Preciosa FOUND

Preciosa is a shy, sensitive adult female. She has been seen roaming the streets and garbage containers of Maca, near Sesimbra, for quite some time. A collaborator of Bianca realised that she had a strange way of walking. On a closer inspection, it resulted obvious that her limp was due to one or more massive fractures to her right front leg, which consolidated in an unnatural way, not having ever been treated medically.
It is sad to see that many people still believe that the old saying that dogs go away to lick their wounds should be applied on practical terms, meaning that their pets do not need (or deserve) any kind of veterinary attention. if they cure by themselves, all the better; if they die trying, well after all they are animals, are not they?
They also think that old animals, with their fragile healths, are a load and therefore the best thing to do is to abandon them as soon as they become sick. Let's hope that Fate will pay them back in the same currency, when they grow old and fragile and their loving children, having learned from their example, stow them away in the cheapest asylum they can find, never to visit them again.
Preciosa's leg is beyond repair, but she manages pretty well to walk, being altoghether a very healthy dog who now awaits for a family that will compensate her injuries with loads of affection.
UPDATE: good news! Preciosa was lost, not abandoned, her owner came to pick her up from the shelter. They were both very happy!

Safira, ADOPTED

Safira in July, when rescued from the street

Safira now

Safira is a doggie that was rescued from the streets in critical state.
Rescuing her was urgent, especially to take her quickly to the vet to have her tested to rule out some diseases like Leishmaniasis. The diagnosis was some sort of curable skin disease, which probably got worse after a long period passes on the streets. She resulted negative to leishmaniosis.
Her skin treatment started, along with a physical and psicological rehabilitation. Since she was taken out from the streets, on July 22nd until today, she has recovered very well. If we do a "Before and After" comparison with pictures, the differences are astounding. She has done also a great psicological progress, holding up to this new opportunity she was given with all her forces. She looks like a new dog!
She is an uncomparable source of sweetness and tenderness. She loves to be close to people, always ready to accept some cuddling. Nowadays she smiles, jumps, wants to be held in the arms, shows her belly...

She likes to walk on the lead, always keeping the pace of the person she accompanies. She also likes so much to run after her toys and balls!
Despite being very happy now, Safira needs to find some caring owners, to give her all the love she needs and that she (presumably) never had before being rescued. She holds on to any and every little piece of affection she receives, as if it was her last opportunity to achieve happiness. She retributes in every gesture and every look all that has been done for her.
Safira is ready for adoption, she needs responsible owners that will be ready to accept the rules and laws that a four legged friend like her requires (Clear criminal record, insurance, vaccinations, registration at the Junta de Freguesia, terms of responsibility). She will soon be sterilised and microchiped.
Although she is happy now, we believe the best for her would be to find someone that would love and care for her for the rest of her life.

Where are those owners that will love you so much, little princess?

Ingrid ADOPTED

We would like to present Ingrid - a sweet young female of 8 months who was found on the streets and brought to our shelter. She is beautiful, gets along very well with other dogs, absolutely sweet with people. She has green eyes, this is not very common.

Ingrid is looking for a new home. Adopt her!

Ingrid has a "madrinha": a "God-mum". It's Claudia. And here is Claudia's blog, blog for people that love animals:

Urgent support needed to get Glucantime and Miltefuran!!!

MARIA

MARIA PAPOILA

MATEUS

FAUSTO

Friends,

Mateus, Maria Papoila and Fausto are now taking Glucantime (injections). For 3 animals this makes 4 flasks per day. In total we need 112 flasks until the end of the treatment. The treatment is not cheap and cannot be interrupted.

This is why we are making here an appeal for donations of Glucantime or financial support.

Moreover, Maria, a half-wild female dog that is with us, also has leshmaniose. We also need to start treating her but she does not let herself be caught so the injections are not possible. The solution is to use a new medication, Miltefuran, that can ne mixed with food. But it is expensive - a bottle costs 100 euros!!
This is urgent. Please help us.

Tareco ADOPTED

This kitten was found without force to walk. His body was just skin and bones. He was the suffering itself. He has only one eye. We took him to the vet and we actually thought that we would need to euthanase him. We thought he had all the diseases possible..... But no. The tests revealed that he did not have anything. No cat AIDS, no cat leucemia. He is clean!! Just anemia and liver problems. We hope he will recover soon. Then we need to find a good home for him.

For the moment we are asking for help to cover the veterinary expenses.

Monty, Pirucas and Mateus

Monty's operation has been a success - you can see him now without the stitches, his eyes are clear; he does not cry anymore. He is still afraid of strangers though. Only people working in the shelter that are there every day can touch him.

Mateus is already walking without the collar, put on weight a little bit and has started a leishmaniasis treatment. (By the way, Maria Papoila has started it to). He is friendly with everyone.

Pirucas is already without the cast and he is walking again although he grown so unaccustomed of using the front leg that he keeps it in the air anyway. We hope he will not be limping. Time will show. Now it is rehabilitation. He is still wearing the collar because the skin on the leg was inflamated and the balm is put there every day. The collar is so he would not lick it.

NINO

Nino is back from the clinic. He is very happy to be back home to Bianca! He undertook a long treatment that included regular bladder washing.... Now he feels much better!

Mateus (died....)

Our Mateus is getting better and better every passing day. He is very gentle and friendly with both people and the other dogs in the shelter. Today we took him to the vet to remove the stitches from the reconstructive surgery he had. The vet said the doggie is healing very well.
