AFONSO - THIS IS HOW HE WAS LIVING.....

Afonso used to live on the street for three years, like this. He is shy and afraid of people. His long fur was terrible..... At the period when the ticks appear he was covered in them, all nested within his tick and mangled fur..... Now Afonso is in Bianca shelter, he has been shaved, vaccinated, dewormed and chipped.
The first days he was unhappy, which is normal in a new place but now he is much better - he is even playing with his companion from the kennel, Lisa and wags his tail.
He is used to eating leftovers of home cooked food so now he only accepts eating dog canned food but he will get used to dry food that we give to all other dogs with time....
The important thing is that he is young, healthy and very sweet. Now we will socialise him, teach him to trust people and to walk on leash.
More updates on sweet Afonso will come soon (and pictures of him after shaving).

Jade needs a home (did not survive....)

Jade is another victim of abandonment like so many others. But besides having been abandoned, she was also shot on the leg with a small gun. She was scared and was running away for a few days so noone could catch her but eventually she came back to the same place she was abandoned and a Bianca volunteer manage to catch her. She was already in quite bad state.....

Her leg was in such bad condition that nothing could have been done to save it and it had to be amputated.

Jade is around 9 or 10 months old and she is a sweet, gentle girl.

Unfortunately there are usually not many candidates to adopt the animals that have some problems, handicaps or defects, not important how small..... Will Jade ever find a home?

Blynd recovering after an operation

Blynd has been operated and her two eyes were removed because their condition was getting worst.
Now it is very important to find her a new home, a definitive one or a temporary one. She is very sweet with people and an extremely gentle dog but she is blind... Imagine a blind dog in the middle of our shelter, she is simply lost, just imagine how a blind dog in the middle 250 other dogs, all running and barking, must feel - lonely and lost. She needs peace and calm and there i is almost impossible.
It would also be very important for Blynd to start walking on the leash, like this she would learn and it would be a important learning experience for her life in a future permanent or a temporary family - if you want to help, come and walk her.

Give her a chance for new life. Blynd is very small, very gentle, she is no trouble and she only asks for cuddles.

HELP FOR SPECIAL TEST AND ALLERGY SHOTS FOR DÉLIO

You know the story of Delio:
He was adopted as a puppy and his owner considered him too lively so he was giving him tranquilisers every day. That caused that the dog's defences went down and he has become allergic to many things.
Soon his body was covered in wounds.
He was abandoned by the owner at the municipal kennel to be euthanised, we rescued him, brought back to the shelter and started a long treatment.
We had him tested against tick fever, leishmaniasis, mushrooms, rabies - everything was negative, until finally we could establish that he was allergic to nearly everything in food and environment. We need to know however what exactly he is allergic to in order to be able to give him a specific vaccination to boost his immune system. Such test is expensive, costs about € 200 plus the vaccination that will be developped specially for him, another 100 €.
He seemed much better recently but a few days ago the wounds started to appear again. So we need to proceed, we cannot wait until his all body is covered in wounds again. We cannot give up on him. We want him to be a healthy normal dog that could be adopted. We need your support for the test and the vaccination.

Merial

Bianca would like to thank a group of friends that came to our shelter on September the 25th. Some of them came from far away to walk our dogs and they also brought an important donation of Merial, 600 Frontline spot-on for 3 months.

Thanks so much for all of them and to Merial.

Female husky

And she was not lucky.
he who found her, a suffering female husky on his door, blind, extremely thin, kicked her, put a cord on her neck and dragged her away from his door because she could not walk and then through stones on her.

We heard about it, went to get her, took to the vet but after a few days at the vet she died anyway.

How can this person sleep?

Pedrito - gentle husky recovering

In a way Pedrito was lucky. He was found and brought to Bianca shelter by someone who asked for help. He is a cross husky.
Some people throw stones at animals on the street, especially when they see that they look sick and some take them in and look for help for them. There lies the difference.

Pedrito has leishmaniasis and he is now doing the Glucantime treatment. He has improved a lot, in a few weeks he gained 5 kg.

Baltazar

A new video of Baltazar, one of our senior dog - who has been waiting for a home for quite long..... Look how joyful and happy he is. He only could be happier in a new home with a family to love and be loved.

Signe

Signe had a tumor on her paw and unfortunately it was inoperable. Her leg had to be amputated.
Here is the video of Signe after her sugery. She is recovering well. She can already walk quite well, pretty amazing actually for a dog of 3 legs.
We hope that she will be adopted anyway. That she will find a home where she could recover better than in a shelter next to a family that would love her and care for her.

Animal Day: 2/10/2010, Belem Lisbon

On Saturday 2/10 we were at the animal adoption fair at Belem in Lisbon organised like every year to celebrate the World Animal Day. On Sunday unfortunately the fair was cancelled because of the bad weather.

This is Arabella. Very sweet and gentle female dog of medium size and 8 months old, sterilised and vaccianted. She was with us at the fair but she was not lucky to find a permanent home. She is still waiting for one, back in our shelter.

And this is Gaston. A small doggy of around 12 kg, around 2-3 years old, very friendly, playful and gentle. Loves people, loves going for walks. He was also at the fair but had no luck - he is back to shelter waiting for a future home.

Marc in his new home

Marc, the sweet and gentle cat that lived over 9 months in a cage was adopted and today we received pictures from his owners.
He is very happy now and is a very beautiful cat.
We wish him and his family all the best in the world.

Zen and Zuki

Zen and Zuki were abandoned near Bianca shelter. Zuki is a yorkshire and Zen is a pequinois.

Zen is blind. One eye is completely lost and is in such state that needs to be surgically removed. The other one will stay but it is too soon to say if his sight can be at least partially recovered. We need financial help for the operation on the first eye.
They tell us an amazing story of friendship and loyalty. Zuki is the 'eyes' of Zen and Zen does everything what Zuki does. Basically Zuki is Zen's guide dog. They are very calm, quiet and gentle dogs and soon when Zen has recovered from his surgery they will be available for adoption. However, they must be adopted together. It is out of question to break apart these two friends.
