Last sutarday two puppies were found in the pine forest, one almost dead, that arrived dead in the hospital. The other, a girl, was admitted. See the condition of this poor creature. Thinness is confusing ...... must have been several weeks without eating ........ how is it possible? He made everyone who saw him cry ..... what a pity we could not save this innocent friend :(...

Impressive ... the condition of this puppy, he has not more than 6 months age, and has

suffered as if he lived forever ..... how can someone let an being get to this point??! He ate

two huge bowls of food and took atarax pill, and after one hour slept a deep sleep as he have

not had for months ....he is extremely sweet, super super sweet.

thinness is revoltente. It is a cocker that may already have been desired, but was not loved

Litos abandoned with a dogcoat but the body is a wound!

Litos was found on Sunday at the side of National Highway 378. He dressed a dog coat, but his boby is a complet wound, ...... we have taken to the vet and he did not want to leave the car, poor guy was afraid of being thrown out again. When we returned to the car was visibly happy:) Do not have scabies, the result was negative, now we await the leishmaniasis bloodresult. He is a young animal, about three years, super sweet and needy.
Today, Monday, he had is first bath, aunt Teresa and Eugenia did that and he loved:)!

In the last week some new animals enter our shelter, some of them very skinny and ill and most of all... very sad.

Shnauzy is cross of Gigant Shnauzer but that didn't prevent her of being abandoned. She is a lovely big female dog and very pretty.

Luanna is a sweet and jumpy girl who just wants some love and to stay on our lap.

Monet and Manta were rescue from the street, unfortunately the brothers didn't have such luck.

Aninhas was also rescue from the street with 3 babies. Two of them already found a home.

James bond is such a sweet and kind male dog.

Nyna also enter and she is a really sweet girl. Only wants huges and cuddles.

2011 Bianca's Dinner

Bianca will be hosting the usual Christmas dinner on December 3rd, with reception at 20h.

The chosen location is "Tenda Mágica" in Fernão Ferro, near Sesimbra.

The event features a magic show and late at night, DJ Pepper will be playing dancing music.

The room is reserved only for Bianca's dinner, and the decoration its all about Christmas.

Volunteers will have the "Bazaar" set for those who wants to acquire Christmas gifts, for example, and our original 2012 calendar will be available too for sale..

The menu is as follows:

Entries:

- Patties, cod fritters, croquettes, grilled sausages;

- Oporto wine, muscatel, martini, juice, water, beer, cola and tonic.

Soup:

- Cream of watercress.

Main Dishes:

- Cod made as Magic style

- Pig made as Magic style.

Vegetarian dish:

- Garlic French à Braz.

Drinks:

-White wine;

- Red wine;

- Beer;

- Juice;

- Cokes and Water.

Dessert:

Like every other years, we invite our guests to bring deserts and participate in our well known desert contest. Those deserts will be served.

Priscila was found without strong to walk.
Her condition was very reserved and after the first visit to the vet, her blood test revealed she had amenia and 2 tick fevers and of course she was starving!
She is very sweet and gentle female dog and the fact she is pure breed didn't prevent to be abandoned.

O resgate de 9 cachorros e a mama Koda

Koda and their babies were rescued on Sunday. There are 2 days after we descovered her, that our volunteer tried to rescue them but Koda didnt trust her. After sunday she is extremelly sweet and kind dog, the most as possible ;) released very grateful, a sweet herat!

The dogs were in a big hole she made to protect them, a super mama;)

Cat Darwin was adopted with two months age, now back to Bianca,he is 8 months. It's super sweet, beautiful, is neutered, is a love. Once arrived we put the cat with kitten Russa, with 2 months age. It was a love so great that he cares and protects her like a mother. It's beautiful to see. It would be so good that they were adopted together. Darwin and Russa are living in a cage.

Kennels improvement

In the beginning of August we started to improved some kennels in our shelter. Some of this kennels had big holes in the floor or cracks.

This work was made according with volunteer disponibility as well weather, drying time etc.

Near two weeks ago, this improvements was over. And its a big deal because with winter aproaching, water and dirty would be in that holes, decreasing animal welfare conditions of our animals. Now its much more easier to clean those kennels and the dogs have better conditions.

And above all this, we made it in record time!!

19 kittens waiting for a home!

Bianca has now 19 kittens waiting for adoption, aged between 6 weeks and 3 months.
As we have no cattery they are in foster families is being very hard to keep them. Please pass this information to help us.

Babe - surgery scheduled

Well, after being submitted to more surgery and castration, the vet that follows him went on vacation and after that the ophthalmologist did too.

Now everything is back to normal and Babe will be operated to his eyes within two weeks.

“How to mistreat and abandon a dog after so many years of companionship.”

This could be a headline of some newspaper about stray animals but in fact is about Rene, a small skinny poodle with a huge eye infection.

Three persons were seen near Meco beach in Sesimbra with a bag dumping something in the ground and moving it with fear. Who saw it thought it was very bizarre and after those three persons left, approached to see it better. Well it was a small poodle on the ground covered with a shirt and sand around it. They left her to die there! This is unreal and absurd!
Rene was taken immediately to the vet and put under sedation because she was so stressed and trying to bit everyone. On the next day, basic blood results came all negative and we are just waiting for parasites result tests. Now she is at our shelter, safe! Every time someone try to hold her she screams in panic, this gives us a small idea of what she been thru all these years. After the initial shock, Rene calm down and walks on the leash, received cuddles and gave back cuddles. This is a huge step for her!

Gaspar was also found abandoned in the street with a little tumour on his face. He was scared and didn’t wanted to be touch but after a while he gain confidence with us and now he is a nice and gentle little dog.
Belamy had so many ticks on her when found that she was anaemic! She spent a few days in the vet and now is recovering very well. Soon will be just fine to be adopted.

Aki was left possibly tied to a tree or fence near Bianca’s shelter but he managed to broke the chain and spent two weeks loose in the middle of the florest in serious danger to be traped in some tree and died. One man with a fishing instrument managed to catch him. Aki is a shy and scared dog. Does like to be touched but hopefully with time he will be socialized.

And many others were abandoned in August but also many were adopted!!
Bianca needs your support. We are short in Temporary Families especially for cats. We have no space for new cats and this is becoming a real problem. If you found one cat, Bianca can promote a responsable adoption for it and put on website and blogs while you have the cat in our home. This could be your change to help us and help the animal.

We remember you that Louise is good to be adopted. Louise is a sweet and gentle female dog who lost one eye. She still so beautiful and loves cuddles and persons.

At first, when people touch her try to bit but after a while she became quiet and calm in our lap.

"How to abandon a loyal friend after so many years of dedication"

This could be the title of an article about cruelty and terror experienced by a poor animal in the hands of owners.
Unfortunately there are people who do not deserve to exist .... only exist to spread the suffering. Look at the history of Rene:A volunteer saw three persons carrying a bag and dumping something on the ground and stirred with fear.
After they left, this volunteer went to the place to see what was that. By the distance it was a white thing very strange.
What our volunteer saw was a poodle on the floor covered with a flannel shirt and sand all around it. We guess the dog was left their to die!
We took it immediately to the vet and sedate him because the dog was in panic and tried to bit and he also have an eye infection. We don't even know if is a male or female or if is already blind.
The volunteer how saw it all already filed a police report.

She is anemic, has 3 tack fevers and very skinny. Luckly is negative for leshmaniose ,)
She was some days in the Clinic Vet, and leave today.

There were 50 people, a record number, which came directly through the group!

Attention - Metal Packages

Maybe you don't realize stray animals pick the garbage can and eat the rest from metal and plastic vessels.
Ideally, we should recycle all packages - metal, glass and metal - but not everyone has a ecological consciousness so - at least - every time you trow this types of can and packages in the garbage can, smash them so animals don't cut themselves or stuck their head inside.
This types of accidents happens than usual.

They are two adults female dogs, very sweet and gentle.
Daissy has only one eye, she limps and she is very skinny. And Esttrela can be pregnant.

More puppies

As if it was not enough, 8 puppies found in a big near the garbage bin and 11 puppies abandoned at the shelter in a closed plastic box, now we have 10 more puppies!
Saturday evening someone called that there was a dog hit by car on the road. we asked our vet to go there but when she arrived the dog was dead already. Two days laters someone was passing nearby and heard crying in the bushes. There were 10 puppies, two days without eating and drinking, only 3 weeks old. This is how we ended up having 10 more puppies for adoption.

The puppies still need to be fed with milk but slowly they are getting used to dog food, we hope they will all survive and soon they will be available for adoption.

This pictures are sad and tragic but this is a reality we have to fight against. Not looking at the pictures, closing your eyes does not mean these things won't happen. On the contrary, they will continue to happen and we need people to have their eyes wide open and try to help.

15 dogs abandoned in one day!!!

In one single day we received 15 dogs! The situation is critical.

On June 22nd 15 dogs were abandoned in our shelter. A mother with 11 puppies – the puppies were in a plastic box taped with scotch with holes to allow them to breath and separately 3 more puppies were abandoned there at the same day.
People here don’t respect dogs. They also don’t respect people that work for the well being of dogs and other animals. Puppies are cute, everyone likes them but when they grow a bit or when people realise that apart from being cute they also require some work, then they just dump them at the shelter. So someone else would take care of the problem. Why don’t their sterilise their animals? They think that because we are an Association that helps animals we are obliged to accept them all. No, we can only accept them as long as we have conditions for that and our shelter has a limited capacity.

This is lamentable. Attitudes like this show how much Portugal is lagging behind the rest of the European Union, not only in financial terms but in particular in social terms.

The puppies that were abandoned were neglected, full of parasites and the costs of treating them, feeding, vaccinating is not negligible. Not even mentioning the time they take. Naturally, as soon as their owners understood that, they dumped them at the shelter to be someone else’s responsibility.

This kind of action only shows how behind our Portuguese society is...

Jackie, Agility Champion

Yesterday was Jackie's „big day“. She went to her very first agility tournament, which is already quite late, considering the fact that she is already two-and-a-half years old. There were dogs starting, just 18 months old as well... but we took our time.

I didn’t want to start with a doggie, that is too young and then runs out of the field or starts to bark at the tunnel instead of going into it... so we trained a lot, with lots of fun … an this is, what happened yesterday.
We were the fifth team starting, out of more than 40 ... I was so nervous. My last agility tournament was with Luna 2006 ... And Jackie was so perfect !! She made no mistake ..... and won !!! We got the first price and I wanted to thank all of you, who made her come here, that you made her find her way to us. She´s perfect dog for the kids and now she´s an agility dog, too. And she´s no border collie and no australian shepherd, just a poor soul from a lonely street ... we love her so much !!!

Pragal school brought food for our dogs and cats

Last Saturday a few students and their teacher Cátia from a secondary school 'Escola Secundária Fernão Mendes Pinto' in Pragal (the course on tourism) came to our shelter to deliver us stuff they arranged during a donation campaign they did in their school for the benefit of Bianca shelter.

On behalf of our dogs and cats we would like to thank them for this noble gesture.

8 puppies in the garbage

Theses 8 little puppies were found in a paper bag next to a garbage bin.

We ask ourselves if the people that abandoned them did not have enough courage to put them inside the bin?

Or did they actually think that others would help themselves one by one from the bag and the puppies would arrange homes???

Blind Robby

Robby was found on the national road in that condition. Honestly, he was one of the worst cases we have ever seen. His fur is a mess, full of grass, little sticks of wood, dirt, leaves and all other stuff and because of this his fur was so dense and heavy that he could hardly walk.
He had a collar against parasites - which by the way was years old - glued to his little neck and of course it caused him wounds.
After we shaved him completely we could see him better and we noticed he was very skinny. He had been straving for a long time.
We suspect he has never had a cuddle or sign of love, never has been well fed or bathed and spent all his all life tied on a chain.

Robby is blind. There is nothing to be done about it. Early enough his eyes could have been operated but not anymore.

He also has a small tumor on his lip, thsi can be easily removed.

We also found out that he suffers from epilepsia, but this is controlable with proper medication.

Robby is a small male dog, fits in every corner or on a sofa and moreover, he is a very sweet and kind dog. He loves company of people and cuddles.

He truly deserves a new chance to be happy and loved.

The third walk of St Dominic´s School

On the 14th of May we had the next walk with the kids from St Dominic's school, last one before the summer break. We hada big group of kids and some parents and many dogs enjoyed the long walk around the shelter. Then it was brushing and putting new Scalibor collars on the dogs. Thank you!

This doggy was abandoned at Bianca shelter one night, simply chained to a fence. This is how he looked like. His fur was terribly and it was full of dirt, leaves, spikes that were entering his skin and making wounds.

It was impossible, he had to be shaved. And he accepted it.... Just submitted him to the shaving and was licking the hands of those he must have considered saviours....

Then a bath.

After a bath, such a relief :) He appeared to be a tiny nice doggy, very friendly with people.

And friendly with other dogs.

Now we are looking for a home for him.

Another edition of Let's Walk the Dog group and photo session

On Saturday 7th of May we had another edition of the big walk. The group Let's Walk the Dog gathers once a month, on the first Saturday of every month and gives a big walk to the dogs. The dogs love it and it also helps us to socialise the shy dogs, teach the dogs that don't know how to walk on the leash, make dogs used to company of other dogs and people...
This Saturday we counted with a very big group of people. Thank you!

Volunteering CIC Benfica

Volunteering Caixa Geral dos Depositos

On the 10th of April we hosted in the shelter a group from Caixa Geral dos Depositos who came to do a day of volunteering within the ambit of the 135th anniversary of CGD.

The volunteers brought donations and they offered our dogs a long walk in the forest.

We would like CGD for the organisation of the event and all volunteers who participated in this special day. Their dedication made our dogs very happy.

Gardening in the shelter!

What have we been up to this weekend? Gardening! We are planting plants between the parks so they would grow quickly (at least we hope so) and create a natural wall between the parks. Like this the dogs will not see the neighbours and will not pass their day barking at some neighbour they don't like.
We have choose those plants for their growth and for their smell (like citronella and lavender) as they are supposed to drive mosquitoes away.
We have not finished! Next weekend we continue with the gardening. Anyone who wants to give a hand is welcome.

Some news from the cat sterilisation project

Bianca has for long time already been active in the area of cat sterilisation. We have regular sterilisation campaigns whose objective is to control the population of street cats from several local cat colonies.

This month, April, the magazine "Sesimbra" issued by the municipality is writing about us and this project.
We would like to thank the municipality for attention and for the support given in this campaign as well as the permission to use the municipal installations.

Bianca in the Secondary School in Loures

Another project within the scope of our educational activity:
Bianca was invited to participate in the initiative organised by the Secondary School José Afonso in Loures. The objective of the initiative was to sensibilise young people to the problem of abandoned animals in Portugal and to make them familiar with the work of Bianca Association. At the same time donations and food for animals were collected.

The initiave lasted for 2 weeks and underwent under the responsibility of prof. Henrique Fernandes and his class EFA 1A.

We would like to thank warmly prof. Fernandes and the Directors of the School that helped to make this initiative happen.

Roy

Roy is a just a 2-month old puppy that was found hit by a car. He didn't break his leg but he damaged the nerve in the right leg and a there is minor dislocation on his left leg. Obviously he needs plenty of rest to recover 100% and he can't play with the others puppies so he is just sitting in a cage observing others play and he gets sad and impatient.
But soon he will be ready to go to a new home. Anyone?

Help for Babe

This lovely cocker spaniel was found on the road near our shelter at nightfall on the 25th of February walking alone. Obviously abandoned there.
He had a tumor on his lip that was enormous and smelled terribly, probably that has grown many months.
On the next day he was shaved with extreme patience and then taken to the vet to have the tumor removed. The operation was successful and since then he has recovered nicely. He also had light ear infection which was cured with two weeks of ear drops. But there is still one thing left.... He has cataracts on both eyes which are progressing and even if he can still see now, he will become blind in the future. Both eyes can be operated and the cataracts removed and he will see fine. Each eye costs 550 €. We would like to have at least one eye operated - one good eye will already ensure him a minimum quality of life.
This is why we are appealing for your donations.

He is a lovely dog, he loves people, he always wants to be touched and petted, he always waves his tail when spoken to. He gets along very well with other dogs, males and females. The story of Junior

Junior came on the website of Mirbessa.

The first time when I saw his picture on the website I liked him already.

And thought that he would surely get a nice home to stay.

My daughter thought of the idea of taking him in house till he would be adopted.

And so she got Junior in February 2011.

That weekend we also came to her house to see him how he was is real.

He was such a cutie and so nice to people and other dogs and so I liked him even more.

Also my husband liked him the first time he saw him.

And some times he made remarks from: he most not be that long at you're home or you're mom will adopt him.

On Sunday march the 6^th we had to make a very difficult decision.

Our own dog Spikey was so sick we had to let him go to sleep.

That was not easy to make that decision but it was the best one for Spikey.

So we let him go.

After this heartbreak decision we went home with our daughter and also the dogs from her felt something had happened and also Junior was happy to see us and gave us a warm welcome again.

At that moment we decided to adopt him.

We could not take him the same day home with us that was not easy for us because of letting Spikey go that day.

So in the next week he came to us.

He felt home that moment and also our other 2 dogs Ruca and Skippy wore glad to have another dog to play with.

We also wore glad to have him in our home.

We will never forget Spikey, but Junior makes it a little easier to fill up that empty spot.

We want to thank Bianca for getting Junior of the streets and Mirbessa for also giving him a second change and brought him to The Netherlands.

Mirelena is recovering

some time ago you adopted an animal from us, a dog or a cat.

Some adoptants sent us the news and pictures which always make us very happy and

for which one we are very grateful. Som others did not.... And we always ask

ourselves how is the animal in the new home, how he/she behaves, how the

puppy/kitten we gave looks now as an adult.... We love them all, we saved them

from the misery on the streets and we worked hard to find new homes for them.

Solange

This female dog, Solange, was found on the 24th of March near Pingo Doce in Carrasqueira with broken leg. The fracture was open and a few days old. Imagine how much she must have suffered during those few days. She was taken immediately to the vet but her wound was very infected so first the infection had to be dealt with. Only yesterday, 29th of March, she was operated but the operation went well and she is recovering nicely.
She is an adult podenga, very gentle. After she has recovered, she needs a home.

Who remembers the BIG Palmas?

"Palmas came to us in Algarve with mistrustful eyes, one of those looks of someone who has been taken out from his home environment and someone who had lost his faith in people. He looked at us and at others from the side and with a cold and intimidating look. My wife had reservations from the beginning regards this adopted dog. He sometimes picked up fights with Taia, our dog that was already there, especially because of the food and chew bones, as he thought that the two bones had to be for him. Each time he found a hole in the fence he would go out barking at people and cars and then he would be looking for something, maybe his old home, but he would come back not knowing where to go otherwise.....
I am used to having dogs of breeds that have strong personalities so I knew I had some work to be done - love and determination being the most important part of it. So it took a long time: we spent time with him, we gave him love, we showed him our affection.
Today Palmas is a completely different animal. The initial suspicion is gone. Right now he has a sweet look, he fully respects the space of Taia, he wants to play every day with a ball or a stick when I get home. He has not more tendencies to run away as he now accepted that this home is his home and he identifies himself with the place. He has a very strong connection with the whole family, especially with my youngest son of 13 years, although this is nothing new as animals have always been a part of my son's Anthony life. He perfectly fulfills his role as a watchdog. He is a powerful and intimidating dog, with a strong low bark and he will not allow anyone to approach the gate. He likes to walk on the lead, unfortunately it has not been possible lately because of the misfortune that happened to me.
In December I locked in my car with the keys in the ignition. As I was away from home I had to take a taxi to get home to pick the other set of keys. I jumped over the wall and my shoe got entangled so I fell down from a height of about 3 meters. I was laying on the floor, completely helpless, having broken my right arm (a very complicated fracture that resulted in a six hours operation afterwards). Palmas understood that I was in trouble when he saw me laying on the floor in pain and he lied down beside me, put his head next to my head and he was constantly licking my face. He remained next to me all this time until I gathered strength to get up and go to the hospital.
We are completely surrendered to this big and sweet dog.
