Your income tax can help Bianca. With no cost for you.
When you fill your tax declaration of 2011 you can direct 0,50% of your income tax to help our animals. The taxes we pay are destinated to finance public expenses. However, excepcionally, according to the Law no 16 of 22nd of June 2001 the taxpayer can, without an additional cost, direct 0,50% of his income tax in favour of non-profit organisms of social and humanitarian and legal persons of public utility.
Bianca, according to the Decree no 10298/2010 published in Diário da República (the Journal of the Republic) 2nd Series, no. 118 of 21st of June 2010was awarded the status of public utility.
This is why we are asking you to choose to direct 0,50% of your income tax to Bianca whose animals need help so much.
To do this, you have to do the following:
when you fill in your tax declaration (on paper or online) you should go to Square 9 of Annex 8, Benefícios Fiscais e Deduções (Fiscal Benefits and Deductions) and out a cross on “Instituições Particulares de Solidariedade Social ou Pessoas Colectivas de Utilidade Pública” (Private Institutions of Social Solidarity and Legal Persons of Public Utility) and write Bianca tax number, NIPC (Número de Identificação de Pessoa Colectiva) 506 068 196.
After receiving the taxes the State sends the amount that the taxpayers donated to the chosen institution. So the amount you donate in 2011 from your tax on the income of 2010 will be received by the Institution in 2011.
Your support is vital for our difficult mission. Choose to help us. We rescue hundreds of animals per year and they will be grateful to you.
Bianca mission - rescue dogs and cats from the streets and promote their responsible adoption. Bianca educates the public about animal welfare and overpopulation problem and how important is to neuter

Pandora adopted as Myr in Denmark :)
"I grew up in a home where we had dogs all my childhood. Since I moved away from home I wished for a dog for several years. I heard of Bianca from a friend of mine, who suggested that we went to Portugal to volunteer for a week.
Before I went, I decided to bring a dog back to Denmark. I looked at the dogs at the webpage before i left, but wasn't certain of which one of them to choose.
When I arrived at the shelter, Myr caught my attention but I still wasn't sure because she was a bit bigger than what I had in mind.
During the week I took her with me when we ate lunch at the grass outside the shelter. Before the week was over I decided to adopt her, because she was nice, calm and friendly.
After an exiting week, where I learned a lot about dog “language” and also confronted and dealt with my insecurity with large dogs, we went back to Denmark.
Back in Denmark the weather was very cold and there was a lot of snow. Myr was obviously not used to snow and didn't walk in the snow for the first couple of days (which she now absolutely loves!).
She was already house trained, and walks beautifully on the leash (people in the street even complimented that). We connected immediately and she is very attached to me.
Initially I needed to adjust a few things at the apartment, for a dog that is obsessed with food. I thought it was enough to close the kitchen door with a small hook, but she managed to break in. So now the door is locked with a key instead, while I am at work.
But other than that she is very well behaved and never destroys anything inside the apartment, never barks and being home alone is no problem either. She is a very happy, affectionate and cuddly dog.
It is difficult for her to “read” other dogs, so she behaves quite offensive when we meet unfamiliar dogs in the street. But we're working on it and she is improving day by day.
She is very motivated and loves training tricks and knows sit, stay, lay down, roll over, high/low five etc. And her favorite treat is small bits of cheese!
She's been with me for a year now, and is a very very happy dog who gets even happier every day. She enjoys life and the luxuries like sleeping in our bed, trips to the beach, forrest an so on.
She's settled in well and even though she had tough beginning of life, her future is bright.

An incredible story of Jazz
Jazz was found abandoned a few years ago in Lagoa de Albufeira. He was avoiding people so only with certain difficulty that the volunteers of Bianca managed to catch him. Then he spend a few more months in the shelter, resulted to be a very nice and friendly dog and he got adopted. He got a good home and lived there happily for one year.
Then his owners went on holidays and placed him in a dog hotel, a thing that a responsible owner would do. The hotel however.... lost the dog. Two days into her holidays the owner, being on another continent and without possibilities of quick return, received a phone call from the hotel that the dog disappeared and they don't know where he is.
As it appeared later, the dog went out through the main gate without anyone paying attention to him.
Bianca volunteers engaged an immediate search for Jazz and the owner joined as soon as she could come back (the dog hotel did not get involved). The dog was rumoured to had been seen there and there but they never managed to actually find him. The owner put lots of ads on the Internet and papers in many places, cafes, cash machines, bus stops, vet clinics, shops, supermarkets, anywhere you can imagine. Some people seeing a similar dog on the street were calling her, she was always going, but it was never him. Nearly 8 months have passed.... She never stopped looking but was losing hope....
When she received another phone call ffrom someone whose neighbours were feeding a stray dog similar to Jazz, she went although without much hope. And it was Jazz! Scared and fugitive, he was eating the food left for him on the street and running away, noone could approach him. He did not recognise his owner, he run away. He did not come back to this place for a few days but eventually he came back. The women feeding him were gradually moving the bowl with food so one day they managed to direct him into a closed area and there they caught him. He was very scared.
The owner came to get him and she took him back home. Once at home it was as if the memory came back, he became immediately relaxed, went to his own bed, recognised all the family members. Now he is safe at home. After 8 months on the street.
Never give up. If you lost your dog, never stop looking and never stop advertising.
A very important tool is http://www.encontra-me.org/ : a webpage where you put ads when you have lost or found a dog or a cat. There you can also order a badge with telephone number for your dog. Your dog should always have your telephone number on him. The electronic chip is also important but it is not enough.

Eyes
Eyes was found inside an old industrial building. It was closed, abandoned, there was nobody inside. Luckily this building was near the main road and when one of our volunteer passed driving her car she actually heard the dog howling. She stopped the care and went to see. And this is how she found Eyes, a beautiful and gentle female husky crying and not managing to get out.
She has a broken leg and because of that she was trapped inside. Also she was in lots of pain. And she was starving! The volunteer gave her a sandwich and she devoured it!!! She must have been close there for days without food and drink.
Now she is in the vet to be operated.

Havana
Havana was found on the side of the road, dehydrated and with broken leg by someone who took her to the vet. This person had her operated, took her home and .... let her ran away. Two days later this person found her again on the road (with the broken leg in the cast) and took her to the vet again and then back home. A few days later he let her run away again. Again she was walking on the street limping with her broken leg in the cast. We think that the person who "rescued" her did not really want her because he did not take minimum care to keep her inside. In her condition she should not even be walking! Moreover, the person did not yet paid the vet's bill.
The vet asked Bianca for help, to take the dog. We don't have to pay the unpaid billl. But we will have to pay the next one. Because she will need another operation to remove the metal plate that is now in her leg. Moreover, she has leishmaniasis and problems with her liver. Poor dog... We will do the best we can to have her cured and find her a home. But now she is just so sad.... Simply sad. She must be missing her home, her owners that abandoned her.

Afonso, a shy Portuguese water dog
Afonso is a beautiful and gentle dog but shy. He was abandoned and lived for quite a long time on the street running away from people and only sneaking back to get some food. At some point we managed to catch him and cut his fur that was terrible.
Since then he ahs been in a kennel in Bianca shelter and he still needs to learn to trust people but we are working on him. He already accepts cuddling and is losing his fear. He likes walking outside of the shelter on the leash and he was very good on the leash from the first day he was taken on a walk which proves that he must have had a home once.
He is looking for a very special, patient and understanding family. He can be adopted although he will need an adaptation period in a new home so the family should be very patient. There is no doubt that with time he will become a lovely dog, extremely grateful to people that gave him a new life.

Gida & Nemi: their new life
Gida (the redbrown sheep-dog type dog) was born on the streets of Sesimbra… A few months old she stroke luck – she was rescued by Bianca volunteers and came to the shelter.
When she was around 1 year old she she found a new home in Copenhagen with me and Lobo - my sweet, gentle, old dog, who calms Gida down and has taught her everything a dog here needs to know (that there’s no need to attack the vacuum cleaner, and that playing with seaweed at the beach and swimming in the sea is fun, not scary!)
Gida is now around 3 years old now but will behave like a puppy forever, I think. She is the class clown, amazingly playful and always comes up with silly ideas! Growing up on the streets and in the shelter, she learned early on that anything(!) will make a fun toy – any tiny bit of paper, tuft of grass, or beetle is fun to toss around, and chasing leafs blowing in the wind is exiting! As I soon discovered, this also meant that various items in my apartment caught her attention… A variety of things has been chewed to bits or shredded – a pillow, laundry hung to dry, CDs, a pair of glasses, a roll of toilet paper… So, my house is now Gida-proof. (But, as I later realized, not Nemi-proof… Because Bianca dogs can jump very high!) Eventually Gida adjusted and learned what are dog’s toys and what are not. She is a very affectionate and cuddly dog, and she is trusty and loves everyone she meets.
I strongly believe that dogs, being pack animals, need to live with other dogs, along with their humans. It would be nice for Gida with a peer who was up for long walks and playing rowdy. Streetdogs make wonderful pets, and why breed dogs when there are so many unwanted animals? I decided to contact Gosia from Bianca on getting another dog from the shelter.
Everyone at Bianca are extremely dedicated and do an incredible amount of hard work to give any neglected, abused or abandoned dog a chance for a new, happy life with loving, responsible owners. They need our support! I did volunteer work at Bianca last year, and recommend anyone who loves dogs, and can cope with the hard work at the shelter, to consider volunteering at Bianca! You can really make a positive difference for the dogs.
As far as getting another dog, I thought of Debbie - a scruffy, wiry furred black dog, about 3 years old. She was quite shy, gentle and had been at the shelter far too long. At many other shelters, she would probably have been put down, but luckily she was brought to Bianca! I remembered her from my stay at Bianca, where she often lay flat on the roof of her doghouse and looked somewhat gloomy. She also had a striking beard! (I love dogs that are considered “ugly”) She got along with all the dogs at the shelter so that was promising as far as her agreeing with both Gida and Lobo.
Debbie, who is now called Nemi, arrived in late October 2010 with a Bianca volunteer. Nemi was anxious and scared, jumped at any strange noise, and was terrified of the traffic. But she trusted me immediately. After a few days getting accustomed to the new environment, she was introduced to Lobo, and the next day to Gida. Lobo was hesitant but accepted Nemi, who behaved distanced but polite to the older dog. Gida and Nemi instantly became best friends! As expected, they all needed some time to get to know and trust each other, but after a few weeks they had become a dogfamily. Nemi was already house trained when she arrived, and never had an accident inside the apartment. She also walks well on the leash and was attentive when I called her name. Still, she seemed to be very earnest and did not want to play. Having lived on the streets, she was obsessive and defensive with food, but soon learned that it was no longer necessary to guard her food. And I learned not to leave anything remotely edible on the kitchen counter, because Nemi (a 22 kg dog) will jump up on the stove or stroll along the kitchen counter in search of a treat!
Now, just 3½ months later, Nemi is a different dog from when she first arrived. With lots of patience, positive training methods and by watching how her dog companions behave, she has become a confident, happy and playful dog! She and Gida love to play scuffle, “catch me if you can”, tug-of-war or toss a teddybear around. That being said, she probably had many bad experiences from living on the streets, because it seems she always expects the worst when she meets a new dog or person. So it is ongoing work to convince her that she does not have to act defensive or flee when someone contacts her. But when she has met people/dogs a few times and recognizes them as friends, she will run up to them, greet them very enthusiastically, bouncing around and waging her tail!

News of Pulgito
Last weekend Pulgito found - finally - a home and responsible owners to love and take care of him, after several long months he spent in our shelter.
Because he suffers from epilepsy his adoption wasn't easy. In fact because he had epilepsy it was difficult for us to find home for him.
Finally he was adopted by a youn couple who lives nearby and aftre a few days in a new home we received a little video of him adapting well. You can see how happy he is and so are we seeing that.

As every month, dogs need fostering
Every month we need YOUR help. Every month we have veterinary bills to pay. This is what our dogs need first of all, the veterinary attention. Only after we have satisfied their basic needs we can allow ourselves to proceed with additional initivates that aim to improve their physical conditions in the shelter.
We need your help to pay the vet bills. You can make a donation for the attention of a particular dog, a one off donation or you can foster any dog on regular basis by making a small monthly donation.
Let's see our needs this month:
1. Cancun was found on the street hit by car. He has a broken toe. The recovery is long, finally the cast is off but he still limps and he needs regular consultations at the vet to monitor his progress.
He is such a gentle dogs and he loves people.
2. Karma was found at a petrol station with her eyes so foggy that it was doubtful she could see anything. She has been going through a treatment, 2 types of eye drops and one kind of eye balm that needs to be applied three times a day. Also regular consultations at the vet - the progress has been slow. She can see something now but we yet don't know if she will be able to recover her sight completely.
3. Klaudio was abandoned at the gate of the shelter with a note that he has an ear infection. How nice of his owners, why treat and spend money if you can just dump the dog on people who will be too sorry for him not to treat. His ears were infected indeed, it has not been treated for such a long time that it has become chronical. He has been taking ear drops and antibiotics but the improvement is very slow so he will need to have his ears operated soon.
4. Wolfie has been with us for over a year. He was found abandoned at Cabo Espichel. Recently he has been limping for long time. Finally the vet diagnosed an inflammation in his knee. After a treatment by anti-inflammatory druga there was no improvement. On the contrary. Finally, this week he had his knee operated. He will face a rehabilitation process but the final result will be good.
5. Biscuit is a poodle who, when found, was crying of pain... He was diagnosed with cristal in the bladder, he could not even pee, so painful it was. He has just been operated and he is recovering.
6. Belle is a 12-year old pincher that was used as a reproduction machine all her life. Every heat, a new litter. Now that she was not serving anymore she was abandoned in a close box at the gate of the shelter one night. She had to be operated too - she had many mammary tumours.
7. Canelo is a gentle dog that has been with us for 3 years. He has developped an anal hernia and he could not even poo.... He was operated too and is slowly recovering. He never complains about anything....
This is not all but these are major cases this months. Apart from this we have lots of minor treatments that add up to the bill. Three dogs have ear infection and need Conofite to clean the ears: Zimbra, Brava and Dique. One dogs will have to undergo the leshmaniose treatment, a month of Glucantime injections: Bart. Three dogs are under the treatment for tick fever, they take Actodix pills: Bonita, Darcy and Afonso. It all ads up.
Your donation for the medical/ veterinary costs, however small, will help us. We solely exist on donations. Without YOUR help we cannot do the work we do.

Kids in the shelter (St Dominic's school)
Last Saturday, 5/02 we hosted over 20 teenagers from St Dominic's school in Carcavelos and some of their parents. The event ocurred on the initiatie of their teacher, Catherine (thank you!). The kids had a guided visit of the shelter and walked the dogs. The dogs were very happy because they got longer walks than usual and lots of cuddling and play, the weather was great and the kids liked their day too! We hope to host more of them in the future but here also we leave the invitation - you are welcome to come back whenever you want!

The story of Princess Leia
My boyfriend and I had talked about getting a dog for months. We always wanted a husky so we checked finn.no for puppies quite often. One day I got a mail from my sister saying "look at this one" and there she was. The most beautiful dog in the world, a mix of husky and podengo, I fell in love. I copied the link and was supposed to send it to my partner, but before I could count to three he already sent me a message, and in that message was the same link I've gotten from my sister, it was meant to be. We sent a message to Aina, who is the Norwegian contact for the dog shelter Bianca, and a week later we went to meet the dog of our dreams. She sat by us the whole time, and our hearts melted. The same evening, we got a call "she can be yours if you really want her". I screamed and laughed and said "of course we want her", and two days later she came home, we finally got our princess.
It didn't take long before she realized that this was gonna be her castle. She has her own bed, her own eating place and she really loves it here. She loves to run, eat, sleep, sniffing, digging for treasures, lying on the floor with her "mother" and listening to music, giving high fives to her "father", but most of all she loves to cuddle. And so do we.
I can't say it enough how much I appreciate what you're doing at Bianca. And if it weren't for all of you, and the lovely Aina, we would never have met this beautiful princess. And for that I thank you with all of my heart.
Best regards
Ola, Milla and Princess Leia.
Atter en gang tusen takk Aina, for at vi fikk muligheten til å få en prinsesse i hus. Det er vi evig takknemlig for. Ønsker deg og dine en finfin søndag.

She was a puppy machine for 11 years!!!! (Belle adopted!)
This beautiful and sweet girl was abandoned at Bianca shelter. She is about 3 kg, so small. Her age is around 11 to 12 years, calculated by the vet. After all thsse years she is not suitable for reproduction anymore! It is estimated that she was used as a machine to produce puppies all those years. One heat after another, litter after litter.
She is very sweet and well behaved. Now she is awaiting a real home with lots of love and respect.

Mr Darcy (adopted!!)
Mr Darcy is a cross Portuguese water dog and he was abandoned at Cabo Espichel, near Sesimbra. There are many dogs abandoned there, basically in the the middle of nowhere and we have lost count how many dogs that we rescued from there.
This is when we manage to get in time. Because there are people who amuse themselves by shooting to dogs there and killing them. For him we were in time.
His fur is a mix of plants and trash. He needs to be shaved, it has gone past the stage when you could resolve it by brushing. But apart from being neglected and dirty, there is nothing wrong with him. On the contrary, he is a really nice and social dog, very gentle, affectionate with people. He needs a new home and owners to love and be loved. Candidates?

Karl: A happy ending story
Karl and his new family in Norway
Dear Bianca!
This is my story about Karl.
Me and my husband where talking about getting a dog. I love long walks in the nature and missed a friend. We started at “Finn” a marketplace on internet. We wanted a puppy. Every evening I was watching at different dogs. Suddenly Karl appeared on the screen. I felt that it was something special about him, but after discussing with my husband he thought it would be difficult. We wanted a dog to walk long trips, and Karl had operated his legs. And he was far away in Portugal, on a rescue shelter named Bianca. I mentioned Karl for my friends and colleges at work. But they were constantly warning me about dog diseases and that “maybe Bianca would try to trick me? Why couldn’t I get a puppy from Norway? How stupid I was!”
Four weeks later, I was still looking for a dog, but without luck. I wondered if Karl had gotten a home. But, there he was, at “Finn”! Every day I was thinking about Karl, I just could get him out of my mind. Finally I wrote to Aina who was the Norwegian contact for the dog shelter Bianca, and asked her about Karl. She wrote that they didn’t know if he was able to walk long trips. Aina sent me a video of Karl and then my decision was clear: It didn’t matter anymore if he wasn’t able to go long walks. I had a strong feeling that this was the right thing to do. I wanted only Karl.
For three months I was waiting for Karl, and in the Easter of 2010 we drove to the airport, very excited. I just loved him from the first sight. Karl was so shy, small and sweet!
My colleges at work warned me about a dangerous traumatized dog. They were so wrong. Karl was the sweetest and most gentle little dog.
In the beginning I was afraid of going long walk with him, because of his legs. I remember the first time I let him run without a leash. My god! He was so happy and he ran so fast, like a grey hound! He was a bit skeptical to our cat, but soon they were getting along god.
I looked at the video of Karl in Portugal, and I noticed that his rear legs seem different today. They are stronger with more muscles and not so crippled. His legs are not a problem at all!
Tommy, my husband took Karl for fishing trips in the summer. He is very fond of Karl too! I took him on long hiking tours. On our trips in the mountain at our cabin, Karl is without a leash, but he is always following me close, as if his afraid of losing me.
Almost every day Karl is with me at work. (My college Christian loves Karl!) In lunch time we are walking in the wood. Karl is a bit suspicious towards other dogs. He was a bit afraid of the puddle of my boss, but after some weeks they get along just fine, playing together. The neighbors’ asked me what kind of dog Karl is, and I answered very proud, that he was from the dog shelter BIANCA in Portugal.
Karl, the shy dog became a happy and playful dog. Karl made my life so good. Every night Karl is lying close to me in our bed. At last Karl got his family.
Thank you Aina and Bianca!
Best regards from
Kari and Tommy
